Only 258 of the 800 biggest German corporations take the health state of own employees seriously and have established a professional health management. Demographic changes and retirement at the age of 67 is simply missed by the remaining companies – at the expense of future competitiveness.
With the new study "Health Management 2007/08" the market researcher EuPD Research now presents, in cooperation with Prof Badura (Universität Bielefeld), the European Business School, the Bertelsmann and Hans Böckler Foundation as well as the Federal Association of Company Health Insurance Funds (BKK), the Top 20 enterprises in this field. Among the manufacturing companies, the automobile producer DaimlerChrysler takes first place, among the service companies the Deutsche Post ranks first. Both companies offer first-class health services to their employees, have integrated the health management system firmly into the company structure and pursue a holistic strategy. Goals and services are reviewed by a sophisticated controlling. Read more about the methods of the study here.
For the study "Gesundheitsmanagement 2006/07" the manager responsible for occupational health of the 500 Top 500 employers of eleven sectors were interviewed. In-depth interviews with more than 100 companies could have been conducted, concerning the structure, position, strategy and controlling as well as services and measures of occupational health management. By means of selected assessment criteria, an index of 30 companies disposing of the best occupational health system to date could be identified.
The result: The majority of the enterprises questioned by EuPD Research have established an occupational health management. However, there are various approaches and degrees of development. A system is mainly established for economical reasons. The companies aim at more motivated employees and expect better performance.
But weaknesses become still apparent, if one looks on firm targets and the strategic planning. The structures need to be more professionalized, too. This holds true especially for the international integration of the systems.
At the same time, the range of services within the scope of occupational health management of the interviewed companies is extended. Most frequently, the companies rely on prevention or consultation offers. They are implemented by special occupational health managers, the human resources departments or external service providers.
A good controlling is an essential part of the occupational health management. Nine out of ten questioned enterprises conduct periodical analysis, but hark back to well-tried methods. Many companies do still not know, how an efficient health controlling beyond traditional key figures, such as absence from work or occupational accidents, may look like.
