PV Thin Film Industry Analysis (EN)
Everybody is talking about PV thin film. Some sixty companies have announced to start thin film production by 2010, and EuPD Research estimates that by then, the production output will amount to 3.5 GW. But will the global demand for PV products grow as fast as the production output boom? How will the production costs develop? And which are the most promising companies? EuPD Research analyzed the booming markets of a-Si, CdTe, CIS & Co. On the basis of a quantitative survey, the competitive intensity and the main future trends of the industry are assessed.

The Italian Photovoltaic Market 2008 -
Overcoming Obstacles (EN)
With the latest version of the feed-in tariff Conto Energia in 2007, the annual installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Italy has increased rapidly: 9.4 MW in 2006, 70 MW in 2007 and expected 140 MW in 2008. This is why companies and investors from Europe and across the world are looking at Italy with great interest.

However, the Italian PV market hides special difficulties and there are still obstacles that have to be overcome. Market entrants should be perfectly prepared and equipped with special inside knowledge before undertaking activities.
This publication delivers not only a perfect overview of, but also a deep insight into the Italian PV market and its individual particularities.

This report contains:
  • results of surveys among 80 Italian module producers, project developers, representatives of public entities, project managers and lawyers
  • comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the Italian PV market
  • publication of exclusive inside information on the particularities of the Italian PV market
  • advise on how to overcome the biggest obstacle of the Italian PV market: the bureaucratic procedures for the implementation of PV plants

  • recommendations and comments regarding risks and potentials of the Italian PV market, extracted from detailed expert talks

The Spanish Photovoltaic Market 2007/08 -
Optimism Despite Legal Uncertainties (EN)
In this third study about photovoltaics in Spain, EuPD Research examines the current state and the future development of the second biggest solar market worldwide. Thanks to ideal natural conditions and a high remuneration for electricity that is fed into the electrical grid, the market grew by more than 350 percent in 2007 – in particular on the basis of large ground-mounted plants. However, current discussions suggest an annual degression of the feed-in tariffs and a promotion targeted to smaller and medium-sized rooftop plants. This is expected to cause a slower market growth and to increase competition between the market participants for the coming years. In order to provide decision makers with detailed information, EuPD Research carried out field research studies among the most important market participants. On the one hand, the report provides comprehensive insights into the current state of the Spanish PV market on the national and the regional level and into its segmentation at the moment and in the future. On the other hand, readers obtain information on production capacities until 2010 and export volumes of Spanish PV panel manufacturers as well as on the distribution of PV components. Finally, illustrations of the development of module and complete system prices and a forecast of the market development until 2010 complete the study.

The French Photovoltaic Market 2007/08 -
Another Path for Photovoltaics (EN)
Despite being among the top ten worldwide photovoltaic markets with a current annual market growth of more than 100 percent, little information has been available on the French photovoltaic market in the past. The new report by EuPD Research, which is edited in collaboration with the solar association ENERPLAN, is the first study to deliver extensive primary information on the French photovoltaic market.

The study closely analyzes the sales market regarding product requirements, system sizes, customer groups, prices and price development as well as distribution channels. Concerning the supply market, especially the available product portfolio in the market is elaborated. Differences between the French continental and the overseas market are analyzed throughout the report. As a special highlight, the study contains profiles of French companies that are active in the PV segment.

All in all, the report sheds light on all previously prevailing obscurities and clarifies the market’s structures and potentials.

The German Photovoltaic Market 2007/08 –
From Sales to Strategic Marketing (DE, EN)
In its latest study EuPD Research deals for the fifth time since 2002 with segments of the PV industry along the value chain from the producer to the installer. Subject of the enquiry is an overview about the current and future developments in the German PV market. The strength of the report lies in the combination of economic analysis, comprehensive data collection as well as company specific investigation.

The empirical framework is a quantitative survey of craft enterprises, which are partly or exclusively active in the field of photovoltaics. They represent the link between the PV industry and the end customers and therefore important intermediaries in the German PV market. Also, in this year for the first time a direct survey of end customers complements the research. The view on the end customer enables insights in the buying behaviour and preferences. Moreover, a detailed market segmentation as well as an overview about company specific developments along the value chain complete the study.

Perspektiven der Solarthermie in Deutschland 2005/06 (DE)
The present study shows the development of the solar thermal sector in Germany. In collaboration with the then existing Federal Association of the Solar Industry (Bundesverband Solarindustrie (BSi)) and the Central Organization for the Sanitary, Heating and Climatization Industries (Zentralverband Sanitär Heizung Klima (ZVSHK)), a representative amount of manufacturers and installers were questioned during the first quarter of 2005 about the development of the solar thermal market. Expert estimations obtained by in-depth interviews and relevant secondary sources provided for a better interpretation of the results.
The study shows, which significance solar thermal will have as a coming growth industry and how solar thermal manufacturers take up the new challenges emerging due to the photovoltaics boom. Apart from the political questions concerning a useful promotion and the relationship towards the photovoltaics sector, the survey concentrates on findings about the end customers’ behavior. In addition, the relations within the value chain between manufacturer, wholesaler and installer are analyzed: Possible opportunities and risks for newly entering companies are equally explained as well as the significance of existing distribution structures.
The study is addressed to all exitisting and potential market participants, having questions concerning existing market structures and the sector’s development within the scope of their entrepreneurial decisions.

Emissions Trading 2005/06 – Taking Stock. First Experiences of German Companies with the EU ETS (EN)
For the first time ever, EuPD Research questioned German companies of the energy industry (e.g. energy supplier) as well as the energy intensive industry (ceramics, pulp and paper, glass, cement/lime/sugar, iron and steel as well as refineries) about the implementation of the EU emission trading scheme. 1,070 companies, totally operating 1,849 plants and being subject to the European Emissions Trading System were asked. In total, 151 interviewees with 357 plants could be included in the final analysis. The statements of the market participants were evaluated and complemented by in-depth interviews with experts and by relevant secondary sources.
The study shows how actively German companies have participated in the emissions trading, so far. Furthermore, the analysis concentrates on the assessment of this climate protection instrument by the interviewees. At the same time, sectoral differences in the implementation are shown. In addition, the study provides for an overview of further climate protection measures conducted by the questioned companies. Moreover, not only the deficits and problems but the advantages and opportunites of emissions trading are explained, as well. At the moment, the entire study is available in English.
