Worldwide
solar energy is gaining ground. Meanwhile, several countries have
introduced interesting promotion models holding out the prospect of
promising markets for solar electricity. In order to judge risks and
chances of these potential markets appropriately, decision makers
of the solar branch need current information on political, economic
and social frameworks. EuPD Research | Energy & Utilities delivers

The
German Photovoltaic Market 2006/07 –
From Excess Demand to Competition |

Interviewed
companies/ method:
The German photovoltaic market has been developing towards one
of the fastest growing technology markets worldwide. Despite
massive capacity increases, the demand could not fully be satisfied
up to now. Within the framework of a company survey among 408
installers and 42 wholesalers, the change processes occurring
in the value chain between manufacturers, wholesalers and installers
is analyzed.
The result:
With a total installed capacity of 1,528 MWp at the end of 2005,
Germany replaced the pioneering photovoltaic country Japan and
is “photovoltaic champion”. For 2006, an increase
by about 600 MWp is expected. The current market development
also provides for clearly positive impulses on the labor market:
At the end of 2005, about 31,000 people worked in the fields
of manufacturing, sales and installation of photovoltaic plants.
The German photovoltaic market is currently developing from
a market dominated by suppliers towards a demand-driven market.
System prices have reached their climax. In 2007, a clear reduction
of the price level is anticipated. |

Value Added of the Survey:
The survey analyzes the market and its motion from two different
points of view: In its first part, the study describes the so
far and future national and international market development.
Additionally, it offers an outlook on the time following the
EEG revision in 2008. This first part centers on an input-output
analysis of the employment effects of photovoltaics.
In the second part of the survey, the market is studied from
the micro perspective. Field research among installing companies
and wholesalers clarifies trends in the purchase and sales market,
analyses the price development and the situation in the end
customer segment. In contrast to comparable surveys solely analyzing
those parts of the supply chain that are relevant for the capital
market, this study generates deeper insights: This is due to
the evaluation of the whole value chain with focus on the developments
in the sales market. Thus, the results are worth reading for
market participants, analysts, research institutes, interested
market observers and potential newcomers. |
